Approach to Sustainability

Environmental Subcommittee

The Environmental Subcommittee implements initiatives to ensure legal compliance, including environmental laws and regulations, reduce emissions of environmentally hazardous substances, and survey the activities of other companies in the industry.

In FY2023.6, we confirmed compliance with environmental laws and regulations, including the amended Energy Conservation Act, and achieved the statutory target of improving 1% or more in the energy consumption intensity on an annual average basis at the facilities designated as Type 2 Specified Business Operators under the said act.

Regarding the reduction in emissions of environmentally hazardous substances, we are comparing the Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions for each facility with the previous period. We are also discussing the effectiveness of the measures implemented, as well as identifying future challenges and countermeasures.

The "Eco-Life Promotion Team," an internal body encouraging each employee to be more aware of environmental issues in their daily life, has created own logo and promoted various initiatives. The efforts include reducing the use of paper towel, donating plastic bottle caps, and recycling plastic document folders. In addition to them we managed the temperature settings of refrigerators and put up posters reminding employees of the appropriate temperature settings for air conditioners.

Going forward, we will calculate indirect emissions from companies in our supply chain (Scope 3), identify targets for reduction, and set goals.

TCFD Subcommittee (TCFD=Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)

The TCFD subcommittee conducts various surveys and studies to develop management strategies using TCFD framework and works to put the action plans into practice aimed at improving corporate value.

Work Style Reform Subcommittee

The Work Style Reform Subcommittee promotes measures for employees to improve productivity and create innovation, aiming at realizing a sustainable society and improving corporate value. Specifically, we are creating workplace environment that helps employees to keep healthy balance of childcare and nursing care with their work while also pursuing their growth.

In FY2023.6, an employee-led small assembly was established at each group company as a secondary group of the Work Style Reform Subcommittee. At each group company the small assembly took the lead in carrying out activities that closely aligned with the needs of employees at each workplace, while as a Group-wide effort, the leaders of each company's assembly joined the Work Style Reform Subcommittee, enabling us to implement more effective initiatives.

Workplace Environment

We provide a comfortable workplace environment by enhancing the hiring, training and evaluation systems that respect the diversity and flexibly adjusting the work systems, with the aim of the realization of workplace diversity.

In FY2023.6, we expanded the cross-functional "buddy team" program to include non-managerial employees, and alongside the full-fledged implementation of 1-on-1 meetings, we strengthened communication across all ranks and departments within the company. Moreover, we responded to the recent rapid inflation by providing special allowances and rising the average salary increase rate in order to support employees' livelihoods. Additionally, we are implementing measures for childcare support across group companies, such as expanding the scope of employees eligible for short-time work and exemption from overtime work. Continuously adapting to internal and external changes, we will continue to work on creating an environment where employees can work with peace of mind.

Employee Growth

We aim to develop human resources that respect diversity while supporting each employee's autonomous career development. We are promoting employee's growth based on the concept of "being capable to learn, think, use imagination, and overcome obstacles on one's own," which reflects our approach emphasizing not only knowledge but also action.

In FY2023.6, we continued providing trainings for managerial positions and senior executives, and also introduced online trainings for non-managerial employees. We aim to establish a comprehensive long-term human resource development program by clarifying skill maps and further enhancing educational trainings.

SSCM Subcommittee(SSCM=Sustainability Supply Chain Management)

Recognizing that collaboration throughout the supply chain as an essential part to practice environmental conservation and proper and fair trade, the SSCM Subcommittee regularly conducts a questionnaire survey of suppliers in accordance with the Sustainable Procurement Policy. The questionnaire covers the topics of compliance, quality, fair and equitable trade, environment, human rights, and information management.

We provided the feedback on the previous survey results to each individual supplier. We will continue to work with each supplier and engage in sustainable supply chain management.
